Fourteen walkers started out on this walk. It was a good choice for a sunny winter’s day. 

Anne-Mette and Fran enjoyed the first part to Whakatikei Bridge and up to the old site of McCurdy’s Castle, then peeled off at the logging road and retraced their steps back to their car. 

Linda came with her two dogs and left us a little further up the logging road adjacent to the turn off where we had a decent break for a natter and a morning tea snack/cuppa or an early lunch for one or two.

After that we took the track up the hill that led to the trig at the top of Cannon Point. The vegetation has been recently been cut back here so we can now see right down the valley towards Wellington. There was snow on the Kaikouras. We stopped for a lunch break on the seats here and soaked in the views.

The remaining eleven of us continued across the top along the 4WD track, down past the Birchville Dam, over the swing bridge, along the road and track at the base of the hill and we walked back along the Tōtara Park stop bank to our cars. Most people chose to go for a coffee at the Mitre 10 Mega Cafe.
