It was an overcast day with rain threatening when we set off from Maidstone Park. After a brief walk along the road, we climbed a 4-wheel drive track which took us to some water tanks on King Charles Drive. It was then along the road to the end where there is a hidden track which after a bit of scrub, brought us out onto the old rail line. Most of this has disappeared and the track wove in and out of it. At one point we could see down to the industrial area of Montgomery Ave. After about 30 minutes we reached Cruikshank Tunnel. 3 of our group decided to walk through the tunnel and have a look at the other end which is private property. We then made our way back out, and went down a side street to some steeps and a steep path which brought us out to the car park on Maidstone Hill. It seemed this track hadn’t seen any maintenance for quite some time. In fact, one good downfall and the steps at the top would disappear completely. We stopped at the lookout for morning tea/lunch before making our way back down to Maidstone Park using a track, I hadn’t been down before. Thanks to Lesley for showing us this route.
Luckily the rain held off with only a couple of spots of rain. I had to dash off, but some members went across the road for a cuppa at Mitre 10.
