It was a perfect day for walking as 11 of us set out from the car park, cloud cover and a slight breeze but no sign of rain. We set off following the Wainuiomata River and once past the old pumping station, the track narrowed and went over an old slip before we started a climb up the hill. This track leads onto a 4-wheel drive track and we passed some Regional Council staff who explained they were busy putting in a wide firebreak. Off we went up the hill, each at their own pace, pausing to enjoys views of the river. At the top, the view changed and we were looking out to the coast. From here it was a flat walk to the lighthouse, where we stopped in a sheltered spot in front of the lighthouse for an early lunch and to enjoy exploring the area or just drinking in the views. 4 of our group made the climb up to the old WWII Gun Emplacements before heading back down to the carpark. For the rest we followed the main road out which dips almost down to the beach before climbing again to a saddle and then down to the car park. At this point I realised I had taken no photos, so thank you to Telas and Anne-Mette for supplying some.
Six of us went on to have a coffee at California Garden Centre before heading home.
