8 Club Members thoroughly enjoyed what could be called a ‘nature walk’ along the rugged but beautiful South Coast to Turakirae and Barney’s Whare (a private coastal hut). Our group met at 9.30am in Silverstream unsure what weather would be like over the hill beyond Wainuiomata. As luck would have it the grey drizzle, we had in Silverstream changed to blue sky and ideal walking conditions at our starting point at Orongorongo car park at the end of the Coastal Road, Wainuiomata.
The track is well used and easy to follow taking us along the rocky coast line. On the return route it is important to read the track signs - veering left at a mid-way point (following Coastal Track signpost) rather than proceeding straight ahead along a signposted PRIVATE ROAD.
Ample vegetation exists to provide sheltered habitat for sheep, lambs, horses, and we even saw a very juvenal baby fowl. Care had to be taken when passing the fowl and its very protective mother. Only one seal was spotted resting on the distant rocks. As the weather was changing, we didn’t spend very long looking for seals; priority being given to getting back to our cars as the route took us head first into the increasing wind.
A most enjoyable 14km Sunday walk was finished with a coffee, cake, and chat at California Garden’s cafe.
