It was an early start, leaving Upper Hutt Railway Station at 8.20m. After the long drive to Holdsworth Road End 12 club members, 2 guests and 2 dogs set off at 10am in good weather to walk the Atiwhakatu Track. As we walked we could see clouds gathering over the hills and it wasn’t long before we felt a few spits, but the rain was light and didn’t worry us much. We walked in beautiful bush and enjoyed the surroundings, crossing many bridges along the way, the dogs did not like the chain link bridge and had to be carried/encouraged across! About half way through the tramp we came across a rather large slip, no doubt caused by last Monday’s stormy weather - it was muddy and slippery and required careful foot placement to negotiate. By 12.30 we reached our destination, Atiwhakatu Hut, where we had our lunch inside the hut, as it was still raining. At 1pm we set off for the return journey, still in light rain, but halfway back to the carpark the rain stopped and by the time we reached our cars just after 3pm there was blue sky to be seen in all directions. We had hoped to find a place open for coffee but it was not to be!
