Eight of us caught the train into Wellington from Upper Hutt. We started walking just before 10am. It was a fine but overcast day. This suited us as we were entirely out in the open. We walked along the waterfront to Oriental Bay and continued along the newly enlarged shared cycle and walkway. It was really interesting looking at the variety of buildings along this area and as we progressed further around Balaena Bay, we noticed the number of houses using cable cars for access. Some houses seemed to be perched on clifftops. We continued on to Greta Point heading away from the road for a short period to keep following the coastline. Once at Greta Point we stopped to look at the old Patent Slip and to read all the information about the area that had once carried out maintenance on all the ships requiring this. We then went into the café for a short lunch break. Then it was back on the road following the shore to Evans Bay where we walked along The Parade to Kilbirnie to catch a bus back to town. The first one that came along was a double-decker and we climbed up top where this bus retraced our journey around the bays. We were so lucky we had such a great view as we saw some Orca’s flash past in the water. Anne-Mette managed to get some photos for us. But it was the icing on a lovely walk.
