Being Mothers’ Day, we only had 7 club members coming on our walk today. Weather was chilly but dry; everyone glad to get out for a walk in what had been a miserable indoor spell.
Long drive from Silverstream to car park at end of Wainuiomata Coast Road where our walk began. Best to allow an hour to drive from Silverstream to start of walk; we only allocated 45 mins was wasn’t quite enough causing two of our group to have to hang around waiting for us.
We been on this rugged coastal walk many times but the delight ceases as we follow the well-defined track. Barney’s Whare is a historic tramping and stockman’s hut located on the rugged Turakirae Head originally used by shepherds driving stock to the Wairarapa.
This hut may be available for trampers to hire nowadays but I don’t know who bookings are made through. Additional outdoor tables and benches have been added since my last visit which leads me to think it’s being used more extensible now.
Care needs to be taken on return walk back to cars that everyone sticks to the same track. 20 mins. from Barney’s Whare the track deviates to the left; a DO NOT ENTER sign directs people to veer to the left rather than proceed straight ahead through open gate posts.
