It was a still, very humid and overcast day when our large group we set out from the carpark of Whareroa Farm. We followed the Farm Race up to the caravan where the toilets are now located. From here we followed the Link Track, crossing a couple of small streams on the way. The Link Track is a zigzag track built for shared use and a rather nice way to climb this good-sized hill. You make your way through bush but once a bit higher coming out to some lovely views. The South Island was looking remarkably close! Once we reached the table, we had a break before walking down the steep but easy 5-ways track back down near the caravan. From here we retraced our steps a bit and went back across one stream, turned right onto the Forest Loop walk which we followed to the Coastal Lookout. We stopped here for views of Kapiti Island and finished our lunch. From here it was a quick descent via the Coastal Lookout walk back to our cars. Most of the group drove into Paekakariki for a cup of coffee at the pub before heading home.
The walk took 2.5 hours and we walk just over 8kms. It was a lovely walk.
