Along the initial ‘easy’ track following Mangatainoka River before the 350 steep ascent, we encountered three sections that had been damaged as a result of storms and heavy rain in recent years. This meant that these parts of the track had been roughly rerouted and needed careful negotiating.
Apart from that, it was an enjoyable experience staying at the recently refurbished Herepai Hut. We had a cozy fire going that night. We took our time hiking on the way back to our cars at the Putara road end.
