The day was forecast for high winds and rain later in the morning, but we were very lucky as we managed to avoid all this. Because it was blowing, we decided to walk this in reverse and start on the beach. Luckily, we did, as the tide was in and walking it later may have meant going along the coastal track instead. We did get a bit of a workout due to the soft sand and the wind was blowing into us. Once we reached Whareroa Beach, we stopped for a snack before heading up the road to the Marines Memorial, where we took our group photo. We usually stop at the Education Centre but as it was in use, we headed straight for the wetlands walk. From here, we found a new track (for us) which took us through trees and bush for another 15 minutes before coming out back on the horse’s cross-country course. Then it was around the small lake and onto the Marines Walk or Yankee Trail. We stopped at some seats at a high point and had a proper break before heading back to the car.
We then enjoyed a cuppa at Paekakariki Village. I will opt for this route again next time I lead this walk.
