Club Gear & Safety

Please ensure your safety by informing the trip leader of any medical condition including medications, disability or special needs.

First Aid Kits:

The Club has two comprehensive kits and several members hold current first aid certificates. A first aid kit is normally carried by the trip leader.

The club runs subsidized First Aid Courses every 2 – 3 years which all club members are invited to participate in.

If you would like to purchase an Outdoor First Aid Book for your personal use, the Mountain Safety Council produce several manuals which they regularly update.

Personal Locator Beacon (PLB):

The Club has two Personal Locator Beacons. These are taken on all overnight tramps or Moderate/Hard day walks by the trip leader, or club member borrowing for private use.

Currently the club has x2 SA2G models. These are very lightweight and it is suggested they are carried on your person rather than in your overnight pack. If your pack is lost, so is the opportunity to set off the PLB.

The PLB has instructions on on the back of the device. The Chief Guide will also go over the use of this when it is collected. The important thing to remember is to leave it on until help arrives. There is also a mirror in the cover to help attract a helicopter.

PLB to be collected from Chief Guide.
Chief Guide to be given details of trip (if not on trip list). We also need participants names and emergency contact numbers and expected return time.
Chief Guide to notify other emergency contacts. There are 3 listed with each PLB.
Trip Leader to ensure all participants know what gear and food to take. Obtain maps and take club first aid kit.
Advise the Chief Guide of safe return and hand back PLB.
If a club trip, fill in Trip report – Chief Guide to email document for completion before the trip commences.
If unable to lead the trip, arrange for a substitute trip leader and advise Chief Guide.

Overdue trips

Note to parents, relatives or friends of members
Should a party be late in returning, please do not worry unduly as there is probably a good reason for the delay.
If you are concerned please contact the Chief Guide or Club Contact
(see “Contact UHWTC”).

Note to Members

Members should tell someone where they are going and when they are due back.
Give your Trip Leader an emergency contact number for the Chief Guide for use should a trip become overdue.
