Clean Green Project - Apr 7th 2024

Huge thanks from Upper Hutt City Council have been extended to the 8 members of UHWTC who did a massive job collecting rubbish along Eastern Hutt road; in Golders Cottage reserve along Fergusson Drive and along the left-hand foot-path south over Silverstream Bridge.

In this small area alone, it was astounding the variety and amount of litter collected. Particularly concerning was the number of polystyrene pieces and particles found in the grass verge adjacent to the railway track close to Silverstream station. Such polystyrene particles would be easily transported during stormy weather to the Hutt River and consumed by fish and birds.

A surprising amount of cardboard; pieces of wood and particle board was found which may have blown off trailers enroute to Silverstream Tip.  The most concerning item found was a large machete knife which we are waiting for the police to come and collect.

UHWTC club members were rewarded for their labours this morning with beautiful autumn weather.  Passing members of the public who were out walking their dogs or passing in their cars tooted their horns and expressed their gratitude to our members for their sterling efforts to keep this area of Silverstream safe for them, their children, and their pets to enjoy.  One lady out walking her dog was so inspired by our work she asked for a rubbish bag so she could pick up litter as she walked her dog.
